| Obverse description | The obverse features the coat of arms of Uganda centered in the field, displaying a shield supported by a Uganda kob (antelope) to the left and a grey crowned crane to the right, with a crossed spear and arrow behind the shield. A ribbon scroll at the base of the arms bears the national motto. The circular legend reads BANK OF UGANDA at the top, with the date 1999 divided on either side of the arms, and the denomination 1000 SHILLINGS along the lower arc. The design is framed by a continuous beaded border. |

This is a novelty issue from Uganda's brief run of "Euro preview" coins struck in 1999, timed to coincide with the euro's launch as an accounting currency on 1 January of that year. Several African nations with no connection to the eurozone produced similar pieces — legal tender by technicality, collector bait in practice — embedding or attaching facsimile euro cent pieces as a gimmick for the European souvenir market. The paper appliqué attachment is the point of the coin, and its survival intact is the only condition question that matters for this type.
