| Obverse description | The obverse displays the coat of arms of Uganda in high relief at centre, featuring a kob antelope as left supporter and a grey crowned crane as right supporter, flanking a quartered shield adorned with a drum, the sun, and wavy lines symbolising the River Nile and Lake Victoria. Two crossed spears appear behind the shield, and a scroll below the arms bears the national motto FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY. The legend BANK OF UGANDA arcs along the upper periphery, the date 1999 is divided to either side of the arms, and the denomination 1000 SHILLINGS curves along the lower border, all within a beaded rim. The coin exhibits a proof-like mirror field. |

Behind the applique, a globe rendered in meridian and parallel lines occupies the lower field, overlaid with an outline map of Europe. Twelve five-pointed stars border the lower periphery in reference to the European Union, and the legend THE NEW EUROPEAN CURRENCY arcs around the upper and lateral border in incuse lettering. |
