Uganda's early 1980s were defined by acute monetary instability following the collapse of the Amin government and the political turbulence that continued through Obote's return to power in 1980. The 1983 note series was issued against a backdrop of severe inflation, which meant high-denomination notes like this 1000 Shillings entered circulation already undermined — purchasing power had eroded sharply even by the time printing was completed.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement provided a degree of technical consistency Uganda's own facilities could not yet guarantee. The watermark remains the sole security feature, modest even by the standards of the period.
