Issued by the Bank of Uganda as part of a wave of late-1990s novelty coinage produced primarily for the collector market, this piece incorporates an actual Netherlands 1 euro coin struck in advance of the eurozone's January 2002 launch — making Uganda, improbably, one of the first issuers to place a pre-circulation Dutch euro in a monetized format. The practice of affixing foreign coins or banknote fragments to base-metal host coins was aggressively marketed to collectors by a handful of private minting houses during this period, with the issuing authority lending little more than its name.
