Part of Austria's long-running "Art of Writing" series celebrating medieval illuminated manuscripts, this issue draws on a tradition of goldsmith and scribal craft that flourished in the monasteries of the Holy Roman Empire. The series was among the last Austrian collector issues denominated in Schillings before the euro replaced the currency on January 1, 2002 — making the entire run a deliberate farewell to a monetary unit that had existed, with interruptions, since 1925.
