Robert Kalina designed this note more than a decade before he was selected to design the original euro banknotes — the assignment that made his name internationally. The 1983 1000 Schilling was among his earlier major commissions for the Staatsdruckerei, and the technical restraint he showed here likely contributed to his later selection for the euro project.
At the 1000 Schilling level, these notes saw heavy commercial and banking use rather than everyday retail circulation. The Oesterreichische Staatsdruckerei printed the entire series domestically, which was consistent Austrian policy throughout the postwar Schilling era.
