The 1957 series was issued during a period of acute political instability in Indonesia — the country was moving toward Guided Democracy under Sukarno, regional rebellions were active in Sumatra and Sulawesi, and the banking system was under significant strain. Thomas De La Rue's involvement reflects the new republic's continued reliance on British security printers well into the late 1950s, a dependency that would effectively end as nationalization pressures intensified in the following decade.
Watermark-only security on a high-denomination note of this period is worth noting — no security thread, no fluorescent ink. By the early 1960s, Indonesia's rampant inflation had rendered the 1000 Rupiah denomination practically trivial.
