Obverse description Central field depicts a helmeted Sri Lanka Army soldier standing at attention in the foreground, raising one arm in triumph while grasping a large unfurled flag on a pole; a second armed soldier is shown advancing in the middle ground to the right. A decorative ribbon banner inscribed in Sinhala appears at the base of the design. The peripheral legend, separated from the field by a beaded border, reads in Sinhala at top, Tamil at left, and Latin at right, all conveying the motto VICTORY THROUGH SACRIFICE; the name of the Sri Lanka Army appears in Sinhala along the lower rim.

Additional information

Issued to mark the Sri Lankan Army's defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a conflict that had ground on for 26 years and claimed an estimated 100,000 lives. The government declared victory in May 2009, and this commemorative followed within months — one of several issues the Central Bank released that year celebrating the end of the civil war.
