State Bank of India launched its rupee-denominated travellers cheque programme in the late 1970s partly to compete with foreign-currency instruments flooding the Indian tourist and business travel market. Specimen cheques from this series were produced at Nasik Road alongside currency notes and postal orders — the India Security Press handled virtually all high-security paper instruments for the Indian government by this point, following its establishment in 1925.
The Calcutta designation on a specimen is worth noting: SBI issued regional variants tied to specific branches as paying locations, meaning specimens exist for multiple cities within the same series and year.
