State Bank of India launched its rupee-denominated travellers cheque programme in the late 1970s partly to compete with foreign-currency instruments flooding the Indian tourist and business travel market. Specimen cheques from this series were produced at Nasik Road alongside currency notes and postal orders — the India Security Press handled virtually all high-security paper instruments for the Indian government by this point, following its establishment in 1925.
The Calcutta designation on a specimen is worth noting: SBI issued regional variants tied to specific branches as paying locations, meaning specimens exist for multiple cities within the same series and year. Calcutta examples turn up less frequently than Bombay or Delhi counterparts in dealer stock.
