Issued to commemorate the Third Islamic Summit Conference held in Lahore in February 1974 — not 1977, which is the strike year — this coin was produced under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's government at a moment when Pakistan was positioning itself as a central voice in pan-Islamic diplomacy. Bhutto had orchestrated the Lahore summit personally, hosting 37 heads of state and cementing the recognition of Bangladesh as a condition of the conference, a politically loaded concession he had resisted since the 1971 war.
Bhutto was executed in April 1979, two years after this coin was struck under his own administration.
