Gyanendra's reign was already politically toxic by 2005 — he had dismissed the elected government in February of that year, assuming direct rule in a move condemned internationally and that accelerated the Maoist insurgency's momentum toward the eventual abolition of the monarchy itself. Commemorative issues from this period carry an awkward historical charge: royal vanity projects minted while the institution commissioning them was collapsing.
Rotary International's centennial in 2005 provided the nominal occasion for this issue.
