Issued as part of Mauritius's independence-era commemorative program, this piece was struck to highlight endemic wildlife at a moment when the Mauritius Flycatcher's survival was genuinely in question — habitat destruction and introduced predators had reduced the species to perilously low numbers in the mid-1970s.
