Additional information

Issued to mark the centenary of the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry, founded in 1850 by a group of Port Louis merchants navigating the economic dislocation that followed the abolition of slavery and the colony's shift from sugar monoculture. The chamber was among the first such bodies established in the British-administered Indian Ocean territories.

The .920 fineness is characteristic of Mauritian commemorative gold of this period, echoing the traditional crown gold standard rather than the .999 fine issues more common in modern commemoratives.
