Pakistan's highest-denomination banknote for much of its modern circulation history, the 1000-rupee note has been periodically updated since 2006 primarily to counter increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting — a persistent problem in South Asia's informal economy, where high-value notes move through channels well outside the banking system. The colour-shifting ink on this series was a direct response to documented forgeries of earlier issues.
The 2010 signature belongs to Shahid Kardar, who served as Governor of the State Bank for just over a year before resigning in 2011, citing government interference in monetary policy — one of the more candid public exits in the institution's history.
