Nepal Rastra Bank introduced this denomination during a period when the Nepali rupee was pegged to the Indian rupee at a fixed rate of 1.60 NRs to 1 INR — a peg that has held since 1994 and continues today. The 1000-rupee note was a high-value instrument in a country where most daily transactions ran well below that threshold, meaning many examples circulated infrequently and survived in surprisingly decent condition relative to lower denominations.

Thomas De La Rue handled production continuously across the nearly two-decade run of this series, though the printing contract itself tells you more about Nepal's limited domestic printing infrastructure in this period than about anything unusual in the note's manufacture. The single watermark security feature reflects the relatively modest anti-counterfeiting expectations of the era.
