Issued to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of Maldivian independence from Britain, which came on July 26, 1965 — a date the islands now observe as their national day. The Maldives Monetary Authority was established only in 1981, replacing the Maldives Monetary Board, making this one of the earlier gold commemoratives issued under its own authority.
Struck in a limited proof edition, these pieces saw virtually no secondary market activity in the years following issue, and auction appearances remain infrequent.
