The Mir is a three-masted full-rigged training ship built in 1987 at the Gdańsk shipyard in Poland — the same yard that launched the Solidarity movement — and has operated under the Russian State University of Marine and Inland Shipping ever since. She has consistently placed at or near the top of the Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Races, earning a competitive reputation unusual for a vessel whose primary purpose is cadet training.
This 1000-rouble issue is part of a Russian series celebrating sail training vessels, struck in fractional quantities intended almost entirely for collector export. Mintage on pieces of this weight and fineness rarely exceeded several hundred examples.
