Transnistria declared independence from Moldova in 1990, though no United Nations member state recognizes it. Its central bank nonetheless issues legal tender, and this gold piece — part of a broader Orthodox heritage series — documents a church in a Transnistrian village that most cartographers still assign to Moldova. The Valia-Adynkae church itself serves a predominantly Moldovan-speaking community in a state whose official script is Cyrillic Russian, a linguistic tension that runs through every institutional decision this unrecognized government makes.
