Rashkov is one of the oldest settlements on the Dniester, with documented Jewish and Moldovan Christian communities dating back centuries — the Orthodox church commemorated here survived Soviet-era religious suppression largely because the village itself was too small to attract sustained institutional attention. Transnistria began issuing collector gold in the early 2000s as an unrecognized state with no access to international financial markets, making these pieces a rare instrument for projecting cultural legitimacy rather than circulating currency.
