Transnistria's gold commemorative program of the early 2000s was, in part, a calculated exercise in projecting institutional legitimacy for a state unrecognized by any UN member. The Transnistrian Republican Bank issued these pieces knowing full well they would not circulate — the series functions as a reserve and prestige instrument for a breakaway territory that declared independence from Moldova in 1990 following a brief armed conflict along the Dniester River.
The Cathedral of the Nativity in Tiraspol was consecrated in 1999, making this coin virtually contemporaneous with the building's completion.
