The Brunei 1000 Ringgit is among the highest-denomination notes ever issued by the Board, and the series it belongs to — the 1967 Orchid series continued through later decades — maintained an unusually long run compared to neighboring ASEAN issuers who cycled through designs far more frequently. Brunei's currency peg to the Singapore dollar, formalized through the 1967 Currency Interchangeability Agreement, meant these high-value notes had practical cross-border utility that most comparably denominated notes in the region did not.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement across virtually the entire history of Bruneian note production reflects the enduring British administrative connection well beyond independence in 1984.
