This note was issued as a commemorative piece marking the funeral of Norodom Sihanouk, who died in Beijing on 15 October 2012 and whose cremation ceremony took place in Phnom Penh in February 2013. Sihanouk had abdicated twice — first in 1955 to enter politics directly, and again in 2004 in favor of his son Norodom Sihamoni. He remained the most politically complex figure in modern Cambodian history, having navigated French colonialism, independence, the Khmer Rouge period, and exile.
A print run of just over 12 million makes this far more limited than standard circulating issues from the National Bank of Cambodia. Whether heavily circulated or retained as souvenirs is an open question — commemorative low-denomination notes in the region frequently end up pulled from circulation almost immediately.
