In the chaotic weeks following the February 1979 revolution, the new Islamic Republic needed circulating currency immediately but had no newly designed notes ready. The solution was provisional: existing pre-revolutionary De La Rue-printed 1000 Rial notes had the Shah's portrait obscured by overprint, repurposing royalist paper for the new order. This type covers two distinct underlying base notes — P-105b and P-105d — each with its own signature pair, producing four catalogued varieties distinguished by overprint color and signatory combination.
Mehran and Ansari represent a transitional moment; Ansari had served under the Shah's government before briefly carrying over, while Khoshkish and Yeganeh reflect the consolidation of revolutionary-aligned technocrats at Bank Markazi.
