The "Quartinho" designation — a diminutive of quarto — places this coin within the fractional gold hierarchy that Portuguese mints maintained for domestic and colonial trade during the late seventeenth century. Pedro governed as Prince Regent from 1668 after forcing his brother Afonso VI into effective exile, first to the Azores and then to Sintra, where Afonso died in 1683. The regency coinage therefore reflects a deliberate assertion of governing authority without yet claiming the royal title Pedro would assume only in 1683.
