The effigy occupies the central field, truncated at the neck. The coin's border is decorated with a continuous beaded rim. |

Maria II's reign saw Portugal clinging to financial stability after decades of civil war between Liberal and Absolutist factions — the Liberal Wars ended in 1834, but the treasury remained strained well into the 1840s. This small gold piece circulated within a monetary system still struggling to normalize after years of wartime fiscal disruption.
The 1851 date places it in the final year of her reign before her death in November of that year during childbirth with her eleventh child.
