João V died in 1750, making this one of the final issues struck under his reign — a reign that had seen Portuguese colonial coinage grow increasingly complex as separate monetary systems developed for Brazil, Pará, and Maranhão. The Grão-Pará and Maranhão designation reflects the administrative reality of northern Portuguese America, governed independently from the Estado do Brasil since 1621, with its own distinct currency needs tied to the Amazon trade economy rather than the Atlantic sugar ports.
