| 表面の銘文 | ANCHIETA CB |
| 裏面の説明 | Central device depicts an open book, referencing Anchieta's literary and evangelical legacy, with the mint date 1938 inscribed above it in the upper field. The denomination 1.000 RÉIS curves along the upper periphery in large, bold letters, and the issuing country name BRASIL is inscribed in prominent capital letters along the lower periphery. The engraver's monogram WT (for Walter Toledo) appears to the right of BRASIL near the rim. The design is bold and modernist in character, with minimal ornamentation. |

Issued to mark the tercentenary of José de Anchieta's death, this coin commemorates the Jesuit missionary who co-founded the settlements that became São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian government had been pushing for Anchieta's beatification since the early twentieth century — Rome wouldn't formally beatify him until 2014 — and the coin arrived decades ahead of that resolution, a piece of national hagiography minted in aluminum bronze.
The "small type" designation distinguishes it from a larger-diameter version struck concurrently. Both types circulated together, an unusual parallel issue that generated collector confusion almost immediately after release.
