Reverse description The reverse displays the crowned royal arms of Portugal set within an ornate shield, bearing the traditional arrangement of five escutcheons in cross formation each charged with five bezants (quinas), surrounded by a bordure of castles. A partial Latin legend encircles the shield, though much of it may be weakly struck or clipped due to the irregular hammered flan. The design is consistent with the standard cruzado coinage of João IV, over which the Afonso VI counterstamp was applied.
