The bank title BANCO DE MALAGA appears across the upper margin, with oval denomination cartouches reading SON 1000 Rvon flanking the vignette at upper left and right. The Banco de Málaga was one of Spain's short-lived provincial banks, chartered under the 1856 banking law that briefly decentralized Spanish note issuance before the Banco de España absorbed them all. Málaga's bank had a particularly compressed existence — the provincial institutions were effectively wound down by the early 1870s, leaving their higher-denomination issues with minimal circulation time and low survival rates.
Perkins, Bacon & Petch brought the same intaglio security techniques to Spanish provincial commissions that they applied to colonial postage stamps and bonds. The 1000 reales de vellón denomination placed this note near the top of the bank's range — not everyday tender in a mid-century Andalusian port economy.
