This issue dates to the year following Philip II of Spain's absorption of the Portuguese crown, a union that lasted until 1640. The Angra mint on Terceira island in the Azores had been a stronghold of António, Prior of Crato — the rival claimant to the Portuguese throne — and continued striking coinage in his name even as Lisbon had already submitted to Philip. By 1582, Spanish forces under the Marquis of Santa Cruz had defeated António's French-backed fleet at the Battle of Ponta Delgada, effectively ending his control of the islands.
