Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse, engraved by David Lawrence, depicts the Yale of Beaufort — a mythical heraldic beast from the Queen's Beasts series — shown passant and facing left, its spotted, goat-like body rendered with bold relief detail including curving horns and a leonine tail. The Yale supports with its forelegs a quartered heraldic shield bearing the royal arms of England, featuring lions passant guardant and fleurs-de-lis in alternating quarters. The legend 'YALE OF BEAUFORT' arcs around the upper field in prominent incuse capitals, flanked by decorative dots at either side of the lower border, with the date '2023' inscribed in the exergue below. The engraver's initials 'DL' appear discreetly at lower right of the central device.

Aanvullende informatie

The Yale of Beaufort is one of the ten Queen's Beasts, a heraldic series the Royal Mint drew from the carved stone figures that flanked the entrance to Westminster Abbey during Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation. This £1,000 denomination is among the largest and heaviest coins the Royal Mint produces commercially, struck in a single kilogram of fine gold to a proof finish — a format reserved almost exclusively for the top tier of the Queen's Beasts completer and collector issues.

Issued posthumously, following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, this piece carries her memorial obverse portrait by Jody Clark.
