Beschrijving keerzijde A dynamic multi-layered composition commemorating the Normandy landings of 6 June 1944. In the foreground, a helmeted Allied soldier bearing a full pack is depicted from behind, advancing toward the shore. Surrounding him are further soldiers in combat gear, rendered in varying relief across the field, evoking the mass of troops storming the beaches. A map of the Normandy coastline appears in the upper background. Two bold diagonal bands bisect the design, bearing the inscriptions 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY and 1000 POUNDS respectively. Aircraft are faintly visible in the upper field, reinforcing the combined-arms character of the operation.

Aanvullende informatie

Alderney sits closer to the Normandy coast than to England — less than 60 miles from the D-Day beaches — and was itself under German occupation from 1940 until liberation in May 1945, nine months after the June 1944 landings it commemorates here. The island's own experience of occupation gives this issue a geographical and historical specificity that most commemorative gold lacks.

At a kilogram of 22-karat gold, this is a presentation piece in every sense, produced for the 60th anniversary of Operation Overlord. KM#41 is one of the largest denomination coins Alderney has issued under its Crown Dependency status.
