| Beschrijving keerzijde | Elaborate high-relief composition derived from Benedetto Pistrucci's celebrated Waterloo Medal design, presented here in its most complete and ambitious form. A central medallion depicts the allegorical group of Victory, a winged female figure on horseback flanked by two armoured warriors mounted on charging steeds, representing the triumph of the allied forces at Waterloo. Surrounding this central scene, in the outer field, are muscular figures of defeated serpent-entwined giants, symbolising the vanquished forces of tyranny and disorder, rendered in dynamic baroque style. Above the central medallion, the figure of Jupiter drives a quadriga of four horses across the heavens, his arm raised in triumph. The engraver's name PISTRUCCI appears in the lower field as a tribute to the original artist. The entire reverse is struck in deeply sculpted high relief, showcasing the exceptional technical capability of the Royal Mint. |

The Waterloo Medal itself has a tortured history: designed by William Wyon and approved in 1816, it was the first British campaign medal issued to every surviving participant regardless of rank — a radical departure from a system that had previously reserved medals for officers. Over 39,000 were eventually distributed, though many soldiers had died or been discharged before the bureaucracy caught up with them.
This piece draws on that medallic lineage directly. At 2010 grams of .999 silver it is among the heaviest modern commemoratives the Royal Mint has produced, a scale more consistent with plate than coinage.
