The incorporation of abacá fiber into Philippine banknote paper is not incidental — the Philippines is the world's dominant producer of abacá, and its use in currency stock is a deliberate sourcing policy maintained through agreements between the BSP and domestic fiber suppliers. The 80/20 cotton-abacá blend gives the substrate a marginally different hand and tear resistance compared to standard cotton-rag stock.
Crane Currency's Malta facility has supplied Philippine notes since 2018, taking over production that had previously moved between several international security printers.
