Candombe, the Afro-Uruguayan drum tradition brought by enslaved West and Central Africans beginning in the late eighteenth century, was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009 — the same recognition that prompted the Banco Central del Uruguay to begin issuing a series of commemoratives around the practice. The 2017 issue is one of several in that run, each tied to a specific instrument or ceremonial element of the tradition as practiced in Montevideo's conventillos.
