The 1000 Pesos Uruguayos denomination was introduced as part of the currency redenomination that replaced the Nuevo Peso at a rate of 1000:1 — meaning this single note equated to one million of the old currency units. Uruguay had suffered severe inflation through the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the redenomination formalized a long-overdue reset. The series ran long enough to require two signature combinations, with Julio de Brun replacing Ricardo Pascale at the presidency of the Banco Central following the 2002 financial crisis, one of the worst banking collapses in Uruguay's modern history.
De Brun's tenure at the helm of the central bank during that crisis makes Serie B notes historically pointed in a way Serie A notes simply are not.
