Murga — the satirical street theater tradition that dominates Montevideo's Carnival — has roots traced back to a 1909 troupe called La Gaditana que se va, widely accepted as the first formal murga group, though some historians push the origins earlier into the nineteenth century. The centennial calculation in this coin's title depends on which founding event one accepts.
