Reverse description A facing bust portrait of Juana de Asbaje (Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz), the celebrated 17th-century Mexican poet and nun, depicted wearing her characteristic nun's habit and wimple with a decorative medallion at the chest. The denomination $1000 appears in large numerals to the left of the portrait, with the date 1989 below the denomination. The Mexico City mint mark Mo appears to the upper right of the portrait. The sitter's name JUANA DE ASBAJE is inscribed in the lower field along the rim, all within a beaded border.
