The 1986 Mexican 1000 Peso gold issue was struck during one of the worst economic crises in modern Mexican history. The peso had collapsed following the 1982 debt default, and by 1986 oil prices — the backbone of government revenue — had crashed again, cutting export earnings nearly in half. Bullion coinage of this kind was effectively aimed at foreign buyers and domestic wealth preservation, not everyday commerce.
KM#527 is part of a short-lived denomination series that was quickly rendered obsolete when Mexico redenominated in 1993, dropping three zeros to create the Nuevo Peso.
