Uruguay's Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay turned to Thomas De La Rue for its high-denomination issues during the 1930s, a period when the bank was consolidating its role as the country's sole note-issuing authority following legislation that had gradually wound down provincial and private competition. The Law of August 14, 1935, which governs this issue, was part of a broader monetary reorganization that followed Uruguay's suspension of gold convertibility in 1932 — a decision forced by the global depression and the collapse of export revenues from beef and wool.
At 1000 Pesos, this was the highest denomination in regular circulation for the series. Notes of this value rarely absorbed much handling; they moved between banks and large commercial accounts rather than through everyday retail trade, which is why survivor condition tends to cluster at the better end of the spectrum.
