Issued as part of Colombia's broader regional commemorative gold program of the 1970s, this piece marks the 450th anniversary of Santa Marta's founding — making it the oldest surviving European-established city on the South American mainland. The Spanish crown authorized the settlement in 1525 under Rodrigo de Bastidas, who was later murdered by his own men in Cuba the following year.
