Vorderseitenbeschreibung Black intaglio print on pink and blue guilloche underprint. A seated allegorical female figure, partially draped, occupies the left vignette, resting against a classical column with a tropical landscape in the background; the bank title is spread across the upper portion within an elaborate engraved cartouche, with the denomination "UN MIL PESOS" boldly stated at centre-right alongside a floral vignette. Denomination numerals "1.000" appear at lower left and "1000" at upper and lower right, with the date "Bogotá, Marzo 4 de 1895" and the printer's imprint along the lower margin.

Rückseitenbeschreibung Printed entirely in red. A central vignette presents a female bust in an elaborate headdress and collar of pre-Columbian or Egyptianate style, set within a radiate guilloche medallion at centre. The denomination "UN MIL PESOS" flanks the central vignette, with large ornate numeral "1000" panels at lower left and lower right; symmetrical decorative corner pieces incorporate scrollwork, floral rosettes, and crossed torch motifs. The printer's imprint and the cashier's signature line labelled "EL CAJERO" appear in the lower portion.

Anmerkungen

The Banco Nacional de Colombia had a troubled institutional life — founded in 1881, it was repeatedly accused of overissuing paper currency to cover government deficits, and was formally liquidated in 1894. Notes continued to circulate and be issued under its name into 1895 during the wind-down period, which gives this high-denomination piece an odd institutional status: printed for a bank that was already being dissolved.

Franklin-Lee Bank Note Company was a relatively short-lived New York engraver, active in the 1890s and known primarily for Latin American contracts. Their work on Colombian issues is among the better-documented portions of their output.
