The 1000-peso denomination sits at the top of Mexico's current circulating series, but the more interesting point is the printer: Banco de México operates its own intaglio facility, making it one of a relatively small group of central banks that produces its own currency entirely in-house rather than contracting to De La Rue, Giesecke+Devrient, or similar specialists. That self-sufficiency dates to the mid-twentieth century and reflects a deliberate policy decision that has not wavered despite the cost of maintaining a full production plant.
The security specification for this issue is notably spare — watermark and thread only, without the polymer window elements or color-shifting ink found in many contemporaneous high-value issues from comparable economies.
