The design depicts a semicircular filigree motif with concentric rows of circles and geometric hatched patterns, evoking indigenous goldwork of the Muisca or Tairona tradition. The upper portion of the field is plain and unadorned. No legend or inscription appears on this side.

Aanvullende informatie

Colombia's 1000 Peso coin entered circulation as the country's central bank worked to reduce dependence on high-denomination paper notes that had become vulnerable to rapid counterfeiting during the particularly violent period of the mid-1990s narco-conflict. Shifting that value to a durable struck coin was a practical security measure as much as a monetary one.

The aluminium bronze alloy was chosen partly for its resistance to the humid tropical climate conditions that accelerated corrosion in earlier copper-heavy Colombian issues.
