El Banco Español de la Habana was the dominant commercial bank in colonial Cuba, operating under Spanish authority and closely tied to the island's plantation economy — including, for much of this period, the slave trade that underpinned it. A 1,000 peso denomination was not a note that circulated through markets or wage transactions; at this value it moved between merchants, planters, and the colonial administration.
The National Bank Note Company engraved and printed this series in New York — a routine arrangement for Latin American and Caribbean issuers who lacked domestic printing infrastructure of comparable quality. The "186x" date range reflects incomplete issuance records; specific dates within the decade remain unconfirmed across the series.
