Issued in 1985 to mark the 175th anniversary of Mexico's 1810 independence movement, this gold commemorative was produced by the Casa de Moneda at a moment of acute economic crisis. The peso had collapsed following the 1982 debt default, and gold-denominated commemoratives were among the few instruments retaining real purchasing value — though they were priced well beyond ordinary circulation.
KM#513 was struck in limited numbers for the collector market, not for general use. The .900 fineness follows the same standard used in Mexico's classic gold coinage going back to the Porfiriato.
