Western Sahara has no functioning government with internationally recognized monetary authority — the territory has been administered by Morocco since 1976 following Spain's withdrawal, while the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic claims sovereignty but controls only a fraction of the land. Coins issued under the "Western Sahara" name are produced for the collector market by private licensing arrangements, not by any mint operating within the territory itself.
Pairing that fiction with a 1492 theme adds a layer of irony: the Spanish colonization of the Americas and Spain's simultaneous presence along the West African coast were products of the same imperial moment.
