| Additional information |
Juan Sebastián de Elcano completed the first circumnavigation of the globe in 1522, returning to Seville in command of the Victoria after Magellan's death in the Philippines left him to finish what the expedition had started. Spain's naval training ship of the same name — a four-masted topsail schooner still in active service today — regularly carries officer cadets on global voyages. The 1998 issue coincides with no particular anniversary, placing it squarely in the Banco de España's ongoing commemorative series rather than any singular occasion.
