The Banco de España printed this note entirely in-house at its Madrid workshop, which was unusual for Spanish issues of the period — the Bank had only recently moved away from dependence on outside contractors. Bartolomé Maura Montaner, the engraver responsible for the intaglio work, was one of the most respected plate engravers in Spain at the time, better known for his postage stamp work under the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre.
The P#68b designation distinguishes a signature variety within the 1915 series. At 1000 pesetas, this was the highest circulating denomination the Bank issued that year — serious money in a country where agricultural day wages rarely exceeded 3 pesetas.
