Obverse description Central portrait vignette of Juan Álvarez de Mendizábal, Spanish economist and statesman, flanked by two allegorical female figures in classical style, one at left and one at right. The composition is framed with fine guilloche lacework borders typical of American Bank Note Company engraving. Denomination numerals and issuer legends are arranged within the border panels.

Reverse description Central intaglio vignette of a large dog standing beside a strongbox and a large key, rendered in fine engraved detail within a rectangular frame — a classical allegory of fidelity and security. The vignette is surrounded by an elaborate guilloche lacework border in red-brown ink, with the denomination numeral 1000 repeated in each corner and the issuer name divided across the central horizontal band.
